Take the Man First

This limited edition print is of an original water color
done in 1984. It emphasizes the action of the
exciting game of polo and the ponies that make it.

Little is known of the early history of polo. There are records of
games resembling it, but to say it was played thousands of years
ago in Persia lays one open to the challenging question of, "were
horses large enough to carry men in those days?" The only authentic
historical data of today's polo dates from the early 1860s when the
first form of the present-day game began to take shape in India. From
India the sport was taken to England and then to America about 1876.

The horse is 65 percent of the game. Polo ponies are perhaps the most
courageous mounts ridden by men in sport. They must have speed
whenever needed throughout the long, hard period of galloping
play. They take their bruises from ride offs and flying
mallets and come gamely back for more.
