The Last Race of the Day

This limited edition print is of an original
oil painting that was done in 1978.

It is the final race of the day. The sky is darkening
but the last light of the setting sun has broken through
the overcast to illuminate the horses. The race track could
be anywhere. What was important to me when I painted
this scene was the threatening sky and the horses running
hard as if to reach home before the storm broke.

The chestnut is rapidly moving up on the outside. I know
he will win this race. He is driving on with great determination.
In three more strides he will overtake the leader. The finish line
is just ahead and he'll cross it five lengths in front.
